The United States Mint has been producing coins since 1792, although the first circulating coins weren't produced unit the following year. Since the medals minted in the early years were not documented as well as the early coinages needed to be, there is limited data on what the first medal to be minted was, and when it was actually struck. This lack of data is exacerbated by the fact the original Treasury building was burned down by the British in 1814, and many records were thrown into the Potomac River during the Civil War to free room for soldiers. My collection, and what will be shown here is almost completely the modern "list" medals that were available from the US Mint through mail in program from catalog lists (and now available on their website), and the commemorative medals minted from 1940-2003. Most of these years were during the mint's "dry-period," when they weren't minting commemorative legal tender coins. I use the 2008 John Dean catalog, "National Commemorative Medals of the United States Mint" as the main base of information for these medals.
