This Joe Louis medal shows the Brown Bomber, and commemorates his fight against the German, Max Schmeling. After being embarrassed by Schmeling in 1936, Joe Louis got a second chance against him in1938. The first fight had made Schmeling a hero in his native Germany, and a poster boy for the Nazi party. With tensions in Europe growing, Hitler and his propaganda machine built Schmeling as proof that Germans were better than all others, and also proof of Aryan superiority over other races. Louis took the training for this fight seriously, unlike their first fight. It was also one of the few times where the USA was united in supporting a black athlete. The fight lasted just two minutes and four seconds, with Schmeling only showing two punches. Between the overwhelming support for an American black athlete, and growing tensions towards the Nazis, this boxing match become one of the most famous in history. Louis would go on to be one of the most successful boxers in history, being world champion for almost 12 years straight, and compiling a 66-3 record.
