The New York State Medal was co-sponsored by the American Numismatic Society. The obverse shows a typical soldier from colonial New York. The reverse shows a Liberty Pole. Liberty Poles were contentious symbols of the freedom sought by the Sons of Liberty of New York, and led to violence when Royal authorities had them removed.
