This medal commemorates the 200th Anniversary of the founding of San Diego, CA. The obverse shows busts of Father Junipero Serra and Governor Gaspar dePortola who founded the Mission San Diego de Alcala, the fist European settlement in what would become the state of California. The reverse shows the California Tower above a covered wagon and flanked by Explorer Juan Cabrillo's ship and Mission San Diego de Alcala. There are two varieties of this medal, pertaining to the letter 'i' in Diego. Some of the medals have the serif in the letter facing backwards, which may have been a purposeful design flaw to try to balance the design. It is unknown if the change happened to the 3" silver medal.
