This medal commemorates Senator Edward William Brooke. Congress awarded Brooke the Congressional Gold Medal in 2008, and it was presented to him on October 28, 2009. This Bronze medal is a replica of the one awarded to Brooke.
Brooke was a Republican politician, and was the first African American popularly elected to the United States Senate. He served two terms from 1967-1979. Previous to his senate terms, he was the 51st Attorney General of Massachusetts.
