This medal commemorates the first African American major league baseball player, Jackie Robinson. While being the player to break the color barrier in the Major Leagues was historic, and his playing career earned him Hall of Fame honors, it was his continued work and advocacy for social justice and civil rights that earned him the Congressional Gold Medal posthumously in 2003.
