This medal commemorates Dr. Michael E. DeBakey, an innovator and educator in the field of health, most extensively based around the human heart. He was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in 2007, and it waspresented to him in 2008, just a few months before his death at the age of 99. The obverse shows the doctor in scrubs standing before an operating table, and the reverse shows a human heart in front of a globe representing his contributions to the entire world.
