Honoring the astronauts from the historic missions, Mercury-Atlas 6 and Apollo 11, this medal was originally awarded to all 4 astronauts as a Congressional Gold Medal in November, 2011. MA-6, piloted by John Glenn was the third human spaceflight for the United States, and made Glenn the first American to orbit the Earth. The Apollo 11 mission, comprising of Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, and Buzz Aldrin, was the first spaceflight that landed humans on the moon. The obverse shows busts of the four astronauts, as well as an astronaut standing on the moon with the US flag and a portion of Earth showing North America. The reverse shows the Lunar Excursion Module, "Eagle" flying above the moon's surface as well as Glenn's spacecraft, "Freedom 7" flying over the Earth.
